Gweilo Cull
I'm writing this entry from Spain at 4.30 in the morning.
I've just got off the phone with Macau. I've learned that following a major strategy shift, all the gweilos from my company have been laid off. Me included.
Because I'd been travelling in Spain I'd been without phone and email access for about a day. After I checked into my hotel, the first thing I did was check my email. Jesus, I wonder what this email is about: 'termination of contract'. It was an email telling me that the parent company had decided to terminate my contract, here's the severance package, would you mind signing the attached form and faxing it back, thanks very much.
Aaagggghhhh. I spent the next 6 hours (middle of the night in Asia) wondering what the fuck I'd done. Needless to say I couldn't sleep. Once Macau had woken up I called my boss, the CEO. It didn't go through to him, instead it went to his assistant. She explained to me that all the gweilos, my boss included, have been laid off. My first reaction, to be honest, was relief: thank goodness it wasn't just me.
There's a lot to say about this, but I first want to get some sleep, digest it all and decide if this blog is the right forum to talk about it.
